Bare trust filing is back for 2026: is your name on someone else's property or account?
The CRA has updated its guidance: certain bare trusts must file a T3 return for tax years ending on or after December 31, 2026. For most, the first deadline is March 31, 2027.
A bare trust can exist without anyone setting one up on purpose. A common example is a parent who is on the title of a child's home only to help with the mortgage, or a family member who holds a bank or investment account on someone else's behalf. The person named on paper is not the real owner, so the CRA may treat the arrangement as a bare trust.
If this sounds like your situation, contact us before the deadline. We'll check whether a T3 return is needed and, if so, prepare and file it for you.
